Kadokawa has officially announced that The Eccentric Doctor of the Moon Flower Kingdom (Gekkakoku Kiiden), the beloved shojo manga by Tohru Himuka, is getting a TV anime adaptation. Revealed on May 22, 2026, the announcement came complete with a teaser trailer, full main cast, and complete production staff details. If you loved The Apothecary Diaries for its blend of medicine, royal court intrigue, and historical fantasy, this is the anime to add to your watchlist.

What Is The Eccentric Doctor of the Moon Flower Kingdom?

Set in the Moon Flower Kingdom, a land inspired by historical China, the story follows a society where healing has long relied on superstitious rituals with dubious results. When the young Prince Keiun ventures out in search of more reliable medical remedies, his party is ambushed by assassins sent by the scheming concubine Ro. In the aftermath, Keiun witnesses a lifesaving surgical procedure that shocks him to his core.

The one who performs this medical feat? Koyou, a beautiful, eccentric teenage girl with unmatched medical knowledge and a peculiar passion for muscles. To properly compensate her and harness her skills for the good of the kingdom, Keiun takes Koyou and her assistant Shingudamu back to the capital. But revolutionizing medicine in a kingdom steeped in tradition is no easy task, and the prince remains a target for those who would see him eliminated. Shadowy conspiracies, medical intrigue, and romance abound in this richly illustrated shojo fantasy.

The original manga by Tohru Himuka began serialization in Kadokawa Shoten’s prestigious Asuka magazine in January 2018 and has since been collected into 15 tankōbon volumes. The series is licensed in English by Seven Seas Entertainment, which describes it as “a shojo manga tale of medicine, royal intrigue, and romance in a setting inspired by historical China!”

If You Loved The Apothecary Diaries, Watch This

The comparisons to The Apothecary Diaries are inevitable and well-deserved. Both series feature:

  • A brilliant female protagonist with specialized medical/pharmaceutical knowledge
  • A historical East Asian-inspired fantasy setting with royal court politics
  • Mystery and intrigue woven into the medical drama
  • A slow-burn romantic subplot between the heroine and a high-ranking male figure
  • Stunningly detailed traditional aesthetics in costume and setting design

Where The Apothecary Diaries focuses on herbal medicine and poisons in a Chinese-inspired imperial court, The Eccentric Doctor of the Moon Flower Kingdom leans more into surgical procedures and direct medical practice, with its heroine unafraid to get her hands dirty. Koyou’s eccentric personality and her obsession with muscles also gives the series a more comedic and playful edge compared to Maomao’s more reserved demeanor.

The Apothecary Diaries was one of the biggest anime hits of recent years, proving there’s massive audience appetite for this genre blend. With Season 2 of The Apothecary Diaries also airing in 2026, fans of medical historical fantasy are eating well this year.

About the Manga

The Eccentric Doctor of the Moon Flower Kingdom has been serialized in Kadokawa’s Asuka shojo manga magazine since January 24, 2018. The series has built a dedicated following over 15 collected volumes, with Seven Seas Entertainment publishing the English edition. The manga is known for:

  • Meticulously researched medical detail blended with fantastical elements
  • Gorgeous traditional Chinese-inspired artwork with elaborate costumes and architecture
  • A strong-willed, unconventional heroine who defies societal expectations
  • Layered political intrigue involving court conspiracies and assassination plots
  • A satisfying slow-burn romance that develops naturally alongside the medical drama

A voice comic adaptation was previously released on the Kadokawa Anime YouTube channel on June 24, 2021, featuring Yumiri Hanamori, Kenji Akabane, Takuya Satō, and Tarusuke Shingaki, giving early fans a taste of how the characters might sound.

What We Know So Far

As of the May 22, 2026 announcement, no release date or broadcast window has been confirmed.
