On June 5, 2026, it was officially announced that illustrator neco‘s beloved Heavily Armed High School Girls (Juusou Koujou Joshi Kousei) project is getting a TV anime adaptation set for a 2027 broadcast. The announcement came with a striking teaser visual drawn by neco themselves, a 32-second teaser trailer, and full production staff details. What started as a single web illustration has grown into a figure franchise — and now, an anime.

Watch the Teaser Trailer

The official teaser trailer was released via the GOOD SMILE CHANNEL on YouTube, giving us our first look at the anime’s visual style and the mysterious world these armed schoolgirls inhabit:

The 32-second teaser trailer features Ichi standing in a devastated world alongside a mysterious girl gazing at the distant sky.

What Is Heavily Armed High School Girls?

Heavily Armed High School Girls is an original multimedia project by illustrator neco, built around the core concept of “armed girls × high school students”. The series depicts high school girls wielding heavy mechanical weaponry — from massive swords to elaborate firearms — in a post-apocalyptic setting.

What makes the project unique is the deliberate contrast at its heart: these girls carry the weight of devastating weaponry while still living as ordinary high school students. Series composer Natsuko Takahashi described it best: “They bear heavy armaments that carry weight beyond just the physical, yet inside they remain high school girls — and that’s what drew me to them.”

The project began as a series of illustrations published online by neco and quickly grew a massive following both in Japan and overseas. Its popularity led to numerous action figures, scale figures, and plastic model kits released through Good Smile Company, including figma and PLAMAX lines. Characters include Ichi (壱), San (参), and others named with numerical designations.

Production Staff

  • Original Creator: neco
  • Director: Masaki Tachibana (Princess Principal, Star Wars: Visions Volume 3)
  • Series Composition: Natsuko Takahashi (Yuyushiki, Tokyo Magnitude 8.0)
  • Production: Good Smile Film & Good Smile Company (joint project)

Masaki Tachibana brings impressive credentials to the director’s chair. He directed the acclaimed spy-action series Princess Principal and contributed to Star Wars: Visions Volume 3. Natsuko Takahashi handles series composition with experience across diverse genres from the heartwarming Yuyushiki to the disaster drama Tokyo Magnitude 8.0.

About the Main Character — Ichi

The teaser visual and trailer both center on Ichi (壱), the franchise’s flagship character. She is depicted as a high school girl carrying multiple iconic swords, standing alone in a devastated landscape. In the teaser trailer, she appears alongside a mysterious girl gazing into the distant sky — hinting at the story these armed schoolgirls will weave in their ruined world.

According to director Masaki Tachibana, he worked closely with neco to develop Ichi’s personality beyond her visual design: “We discussed what kind of personality this character might have, and shaped the script with neco’s input.” He also confirmed that voice recording is already underway, adding that hearing the cast’s performances led to new discoveries about the characters.

Comments from the Creative Team

neco (Original Creator):
“Having your own work become an anime is one of the greatest joys imaginable for an illustrator. Heavily Armed High School Girls started as a single illustration and has grown into figures and now an anime. I’ve done everything I can for this project. I hope everyone looks forward to it.”

Masaki Tachibana (Director):
“When it came time to adapt Heavily Armed High School Girls into anime, I spoke with neco and received their input on the characters’ personalities. When voices were recorded and life was breathed into them, neco and I enjoyed discovering new things together. Please look forward to Ichi and the others’ activities.”

Natsuko Takahashi (Series Composition):
“I was immediately drawn to neco’s heavily armed high school girls. Having extensive discussions with director Tachibana, neco, and the staff has deeply enriched the work’s appeal. I was constantly impressed by the production team’s ideas and proposals. I hope you’ll enjoy watching these girls who bear heavy armaments yet still carry the light smiles of high school students.”

Good Smile Fes 2026 Tokyo Event

To celebrate the anime announcement, a special Heavily Armed High School Girls booth will appear at Good Smile Fes 2026 Tokyo, taking place June 6-7, 2026 at Belsalle Akihabara in Tokyo. The event is free to enter and will feature:

  • Display of the anime teaser visual
  • Cosplay greeting by popular cosplayer Nene (@__zzz___oo0) as Ichi
  • Novelty items and merchandise distribution

It’s interesting to see how Heavily Armed High School Girls evolved from a single illustration into a figure franchise and now a full TV anime. The teaser doesn’t reveal much yet, but the devastated setting and the appearance of the mysterious girl alongside Ichi make me curious about how much original story material the anime will add beyond the existing concept artwork.
